Recording Vocals the Right Way

ilfsn | 26.06.2018 | 2 Hours | 2.3 GB

This course breaks down all of the variables involved with recording vocals for music; how to choose the right microphone, set the preamp and compressor, and how to run your D.A.W. most effectively. We take you through the steps of a typical recording session using a professional studio (Madison Records) and singer (Alex Tru). Various microphones, Vintech 573 preamp, EL8 Distressor compressor, and Pro Tools software are all utilized and explained in detail. Additionally, there is a section dedicated to post-production techniques. We explain what to do after you have finished recording. Comping vocals, editing, and basic mixing techniques are all covered in this section.

Exploring FM with Operator

SYNTHiC4TE | June 26 2018 | 111 MB

Ableton Live’s Operator is a very powerful FM (Frequency Modulation) synth with some interesting tricks up its sleeve. Explore this fantastic Live instrument with sound designer Rishabh Rajan, and get into FM synthesis the right way! Popularized in the early ’80s with the Yamaha DX7, FM synthesis often has a reputation of being overly complex and difficult to understand (mostly because it was a pain to tweak parameters using a single data slider on such a small LCD screen!) Thankfully, Operator’s user interface makes FM much easier to grasp and program. In this course, Ableton Live expert explains everything you need to know about FM and Live’s very flexible Operator device.

Rishabh starts the course with a solid overview of Operator’s interface, followed by a very clear explanation and demonstration of FM synthesis. Once you know all about modulators, carrier, and algorithms, you’re ready to dig deeper into this extremely versatile synth. You learn how to create your own waveforms by adjusting odd and even harmonics, you discover the interesting Feedback function, and you learn how Operator’s envelope offers more options than most synths. You’ll also learn about the Filter section, LFOs, and more… The course ends with a sound design example where you create an electric piano sound from scratch.

What is compression? How does it work, and why do we use it?

In this short demonstration, I discuss the parameters of a typical compressor, and how they affect and shape the sound. There’s a lot of information out there on compression, but my goal of this course is to provide you with clear and understandable explanations for understanding the workings of a compressor.

Learn an intuitive approach to music composition for film, TV and game music. This workshop will not require reading or writing music notation (although examples will be available). This workshop-style course will introduce you to the elements of music that are necessary for creating emotional moods in your compositions. You will compose 3 different musical cues (short, 30-second compositions) representing 3 specific moods (urgent, calm and creepy). This course will introduce you to valuable music theory concepts and walk you through the process of composing these 3 cues. You will learn when and how to use musical elements such as rhythm, harmony, melody and scales to convey emotion effectively and quickly.

This course presents examples using MIDI, audio clips and Ableton Live. Ableton projects are available for download (so that students can follow along). However, students can also download the audio and MIDI clips and load them into any DAW. This course also assumes that students are familiar with basic music theory concepts – such as triads and major and minor scales.

In The Digital World

Electronic music has the ability to make you dance and feel high on life and can also be thought provoking and reflective. With a minimal setup of a computer and a keyboard, you can dive into a world of endless possibilities and create your own instrumental electronic music composition. In this class, we’re going to create a song by exploring the beat, the bass and the lead melody; the three basic elements to our piece. By the end, you’ll be ready to create your own electronic song with mood and feeling. All you need for this class is a computer with the DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) of your choice, a keyboard and a pair of speakers or headphones. Basic knowledge of music is helpful but not mandatory.

Create Deep House Remix in Logic Pro X

FANTASTiC | 27 June 2018 | 2.19 GB

Do you want to create music that has the same quality as the big producers in the Deep House genre?  Welcome to this course where I will learn you how to create a Deep House Track in Logic Pro X. In this course – you will learn how to create a “modern” Deep House track fast and how to get ideas quickly. We will remix a popular track from Calvin Harris and remake it from scratch into a Deep House track. In just a few hours you will learn how to overcome writers block and arrange your track fast. I have produced electronic music ever since I met DJ’s like Avicii, Alesso or Otto Knows (they actually went to the same High School as me in Stockholm, Sweden) and that is for a long time – over 10 years now – and a few years ago I got to a point where I couldn’t get past writers block and I didn’t know what to produce anymore. The genre “Electronic Music” started to get generic and after a while the style got slower in tempo – from 128BPM to 110BPM and even slower. After trying to experiment with tempo and different style I became a lot more inspired to create music again.

First we’re going over how to create an initial idea and just getting in to an creative stage where we just throw in different sounds that we like and without thinking about any rule at all. There is no rules when you are creative – that way it is easier to get your own unique sound instead of just copying every other producers music styles.

After that we are going to arrange our track and cleaning up the project. I like arranging my track as soon as I have a proper idea laid out in Logic Pro X. That way it is a lot easier to see what kind of sound you need to add in, like FX and different transitional elements to make your track stand out and sound professional as well as not sounding static and robotic – since this is electronic music.

When we are done creating our track and adding all sounds that we both need and that we want to have there we want to create a proper mixdown and master our track so it sounds great on every sound system there is. We want to have our track to sound great on both car stereos, our iPhone’s and on a big club sound system as well.

So let’s see you in the class :)

Music Theory Concepts for Conveying Emotion

FANTASTiC | 27 June 2018 | 616 MB

This course explains important music theory concepts that help during the composition or songwriting process. You’ll learn how major and minor scales are built and you’ll learn how and why chords relate to major and minor scales so that you can make better, more informed choices when you’re writing chord progressions (harmony). You’ll become familiar with patterns in scales and chords and learn how composing using numbers (numerals), rather than notes, is the best way to go!

You’ll also learn about rhythm, cadences, register, range and timbre. If you have a background in these topics then this course will provide some perspective on how these concepts relate to the process of writing music that conveys specific emotions. This course is helpful to any student looking to learn about music theory and the fundamentals of compositional theory.
