Analog-Digital Hybrid, Before It Was Even a Thing. In 1983, Roland followed the massively influential TR-808 with the TR-909. Only around 10,000 were made, but the influence of this machine is heard, and felt, to this very day. Digital samples of “real drums” had become fashionable, but these sounds were not tweakable and, let’s be honest, still didn’t sound like real drums. So, Roland took a hybrid approach that used analog circuitry for the kick, snare, hi-hat, clap, and toms, and used digital sampling for the cymbals. The result was one of the most beloved and influential musical instruments ever made. It’s the sound you hear in your head when you think of speaker-pummeling, floor-shaking dance music.

What is the DSM V2 plugin? The DSM V2 will capture both, the frequency-domain and the dynamic characteristics of even the most complex audio material. This “capture” can then be used in its original form (or even be altered using the Parametric Threshold EQ) to control the dynamics of the audio material and increase the loudness. Thats if you use the DSM V2 plugin as a mastering limiter. In fact it can do much more than this. It can serve as a great de-esser, vocal enhancer and compressor, and it can add some nice magic to your audio. This unique feature uses ground breaking adaptive techniques to capture both the frequency-domain and dynamic characteristics of audio program, and uses this as the basis for a highly developed large scale multiband compression process. This means that it can sympathetically handle programme over a very wide dynamic range without many of the usual compression artefacts, coping even with large-scale percussive events which badly confound conventional compressors.

The DSM also includes a single-button Limiter function
The Limiter has been optimised specifically to work with the compression stage. This allows short term peak events in the programme to exceed maximum peak modulation levels without causing overs or loss of impact, whilst retaining complete transparency for levels below -1dBFS.

To many at the time, its tweakable analog tones didn’t exactly deliver “traditional” or “realistic” drum sounds. It wasn’t until after a few adventurous musicians and producers got their hands on the TR-808 and started tweaking those knobs that the world would feel the impact it would leave on music forever. For decades since, the sizzling hi-hats and snappy snare, the clicky rim shot, the unmistakable cowbell, and yes—that booming bass drum—have been heard on worldwide hits and underground classics. Its influence is so deep that it’s been name-dropped in famous tracks, had albums dedicated to it, bands named after it, and is even the subject of a feature-length documentary film.

The Roland TR-808 is one of the most revered and sought-after electronic musical instruments of all time—and its influence only continues to grow. New musical genres make heavy use of the 808, with some utilizing it as the main instrument and defining sound of the style. The Roland TR-808 is so desirable that original units sell for thousands of dollars on the used market and it’s often been imitated with sound-alike sample-packs, less-than-faithful apps, and knock-offs. But the 808 is a complex beast and far more than the sum of its parts. Its iconic user interface and the unique personality created by the sounds responding and interacting with each other are vitally important to conjuring up that authentic TR-808 mojo. And you know it when you hear it.

The Return of The King
Using our proprietary Analog Circuit Behavior technology, we’ve painstakingly recreated the original analog circuits that are the essence of the TR-808’s distinct sound. All the nuance and detail are accounted for resulting in a living, breathing Roland TR-808 for your DAW. This software adaption not only sounds and acts true-to-life, but it injects new and exciting enhancements into the classic 808 formula. Each pattern has eight variations so you can create evolving sequences that keep things interesting. The classic 16-step “TR-REC” sequencer can be expanded to include a sequencer lane for each drum instrument so you can program faster and more fluidly. The sequencer has adjustable flams and sub-steps so you can create detailed fills and ratcheting sequences. And each instrument has its own “last step” and shuffle settings so you can play with timing, experiment with polyrhythms, and dial in just the right groove for your tracks. You can even drag patterns from the TR-808 directly into your DAW as MIDI or audio clips!

TCS-68, an audio effect that pays homage to one of the most iconic cassette tape based 8-track recorders. The TCS-68 cassette tape channel effect includes a faithful recreation of the preamp, the tape system and the EQ. The original unit comprised a powerful 10-channel mixer that included a simple 3-band EQ, mic and line inputs as well as insert loops for each channel, an 8-track recorder with an advanced noise reduction system and a clearly arranged meter bridge. Given that it used compact cassettes as a recording medium it’s obvious that it was far from high fidelity sounding and thus aimed at semiprofessional users and smaller studios.

The goal when creating the TCS-68 was to do justice to the original sound. So the preamp, the tape system and the EQ have been faithfully recreated.
